Vancouver Tantra Adventures
Last night, I got taken for a surprise late night ride in a taxi through the streets of Vancouver. What an enchanting city this is. I love the deep slopes and magnificent bridges. After the Olympics, this city is decorated with artwork everywhere. In the middle of summer still, trees are lit up in magnificent display. There are walkways everywhere along the sea, and parks. And the night... it was delicious.
We arrived in Vancouver Thursday past. It was hot. And all the mountains surrounding the city were snow-capped. I love this contrast in North America. We lived in Vancouver for five nights and stayed in three different places with fascinating people. Norma and Robert run a health company called Omega. The two of them have been pioneers in the processing and packaging of omega oils. Dez met them when he was actively running his spirolina business. He has known them for twenty years, and they have become like family to him.
Next we stay with Freya in her beautiful apartment overlooking the ocean. I stay in her lounge/session area, decorated with drapes, golden pillars and beautiful paintings. She is a fascinating woman who has spent many years living reclusively on a Vancouver island, and now is practicing as a Sacred Intimate (see http://freyasanctuary.com). Her partner Hudson is a beautiful Jamaican musician who has been exploring the realms Freya is traversing. We spend late night after our talk and workshop sitting around a fire on my bed in the lounge, drinking red wine and playing songs.
Our third host was Taylore, an intimacy coach who is writing a book on deepening relationship for couples who are in business together. I spend our last afternoon in Vancouver with her and Olyvia, the host of our talks, cruising through the endlessly delicious Banyan Bookshop, and then having Aphrodite Chai and gluten-free rhubarb pie at the organic coffee shop next door. Taylore has fascinating stories to tell about her life, like the time she rented a six bedroom mansion because it had a lounge that was big enough for her to do suspension dance in. Suspension dance is done from silk scarfs hanging from the ceiling. Taylore loves dancing; we spend a fabulous half hour doing deep trance dance in her studio on Professor Trance's music - her favorite, and now one of mine too.
We did two talks and sex magic workshops and one practitioner's workshop in Vancouver. The take-up was slow, but the people were beautiful and the practitioner's workshop in particular went really deep. Participants are a mixture of practitioners (tantric massage practitioners, sacred intimates, dakas and dakinis and people working in related healing arts, as well as professionals and seekers from other walks of life. Vancouver is noticeably multicultural and it is good to this reflected in the participants. There is a huge Asian population in this city, so I am happy to have some oriental participants in the group.
Dez and I work together processing what comes up for a for a few of the participants. One pattern that comes up strongly is the polarity of abandonment and suffocation. We do an enactment where we first all descent on the participant with all our overextended love and judgment and opinions, and then leave her alone in the corner for a long time while continuing with the process. In reflection later, the participant reflected on all the emotions she moved through in quick succession. In sitting with all these experiences, something shifted in her, and her eyes came alight. I teach the group death/loneliness meditation, which is a meditation in which you move your attention from the outer to the inner to the outer breath by breath. Thus doing, eventually the perception that there is an 'inner' and an 'outer' starts to dissolve.
We have a viewing of Dez's Sex Magic movie in Taylore's studio. This is the first time I see the whole film. Dez takes questions and gives some reflections on the film afterwards. The film is clearly controversial, it stirs up emotions and arguments that Dez fields eloquently. In my summary, I would say that the movie is about sacred sexual work happening around Dez' Sedona Temple, as well as Dez' personal relationship life and his journey with Polyamory. Dez is on stage in the movie in many ways, and he is comfortable there. The movie also is about Dez' use of sex magic with other lovers to call back Maya, the woman that he chose to be with. She did come back to him for a few months in his life, enough time for him to realize that they were not meant to be together.
I spend much of Sunday with Linda Jervis, who attended my retreats in Knysna before she immigrated to Vancouver with her family. It is lovely seeing her and listening to her life story. Linda was a professional ballet dancer for a while and then had an accident that has restricted her movement ability. She has recently done a soul coaching course of Denise Lynn, and has now registered her own practice called Soulflow (see soulflow.shaw.ca) After a lovely seafood lunch looking out over the bay filled with yachts, we take a drive along the sea to the forested part of town - the trees, again, are breathtaking.
My perception of Vancouver is that practitioners of sexual arts here have thus far mostly been doing their own thing with not much networking and limited support from teachers; that may be about to change. Also, there are interesting events coming to Vancouver, like the women's squirtshop (female ejaculation workshop) that Tulula presented here on Sunday. Dez went to the squirtshop after-party while I went to catch up on sleep.
Dez, Natasha and I are traveling together harmoniously, and also at times have some intense conversations about topics on which we have different positions or areas where we choose to present differently. Some of our differences are cultural and influenced by the contextual differences between growing up in Africa and in North America. Natasha grew up in Russia, so she brings in yet another perspective. For me, this road trip is a valuable opportunity to become clearer on my own perspective, to see where I can be of use in the world. My motivation to publish the books I have been working on is getting stronger.
Natasha is attending sessions with me and bringing a deeply compassionate presence with her. She also asks incisive, valuable questions. She is exploring her own approach to sacred sexual healing work. I am valuing her realness and her willingness to go deep while staying light and grounded. She is a very accomplished and popular massage therapist, but has packed up everything for now to be on the road with Dez for the next six months or so (and me for the time that I am here).
We hear from Simon every now and again, it is beautiful to witness his growth and deepening is he is finding his way in North America.
Now, off to Seattle. Dez and I are having our last talk and workshop together this Thursday evening in Seattle; see http://sedonatemple.com/2010-north-america.php. It looks like I may be doing a few short notice workshops for women and/or practitioners here, and definitely also sessions. Contact me on shakti@shakti.co.za if you want to hear more. And there is a chance I'll be doing more workshops and sessions on the way to San Francisco - I will keep you posted!
